One of my favorite Wikipedia pages. What makes people who believe Jesus is/was real based on faith not believe these people?
An outspoken evangelical leader preached a potentially controversial sermon this weekend, saying “nagging wives” are like water torture. Mark Driscol, pastor of the Mars Hill Church in Seattle, made the comments Sunday during a sermon based on a Bible passage from Ephesians, which reads in part:
Christianity misogynistic. In related news, sky blue.
I was angry with God. So I said “Right that’s it I’m not believing in God anymore, I’m going to be an atheist”.
How could you choose what to believe? That’s not how belief works. If you’re mad at your parents, you can’t just walk around the house believing they don’t exist. You can act like they don’t exist and ignore them, but your belief that they exist is unaffected by your emotional state.
Living life to the fullest for myself only…
That’s not a thing that has to do with atheism. Perhaps some atheists live life “to the fullest only for themselves,” while others stay indoors all day and serve others. As long as neither has a belief in a god, they’re both atheists. Also, “Living life to the fullest” has got to contradict to living “only for yourself.”
Yet when I was most alone and scared and worried. It was God whom I turned to.
Once, when I was in high school I was really nervous about some shit and I couldn’t sleep so I dug out my old teddy bear and cuddled up with it. It helped me go to sleep, but unlike when I was 5, I didn’t think it was actually hugging me back. What’s the difference between your story and mine?
Living life to the fullest really meant staying trapped within the materialistic world.
So, you’re electing, instead, to live in an imaginary world and suppress yourself?
I have been blessed.
Really, did you receive some kind of certificate of blessing?
“I know people who became atheists after reading the bible”
Reading a english mistranslation with editing done by various and sundry scribes and whatnot this is very important I take your critical analysis very seriously tell me more
Oh, is there a language where The Bible doesn’t have any stories about supernatural creatures, events or “prophecies”?
Dude, if you have a predatory voice in your head that is NOT Jesus. You’re actually just hearing voices. But you’re still a predator.
police: so why did you think it was okay to have sex with a 16, 17 year old girl?
Schaap: because Jesus.
Here’s how this thought process works. Say you’re a Christian and you’re told to be 100% devoted to Christ in everything and no matter what God asks of you, no matter how strange, you do it. So, if you’re Abraham and God wants you to slaughter your son, you don’t hesitate. You drag that child up to the mountain top and you bring the blade down on him and if God stops you before you spill any blood then you praise and thank him just as much as you would if you had killed him. Today, God doesn’t make so many public appearances because he’s got the church to communicate through so anyone who becomes a pastor or a priest or any other “man of God,” instantly gains the trust of the community. Why wouldn’t they trust him, he’s been sanctioned by God. If he weren’t sanctioned by God, if God didn’t want this guy speaking for him, why would God allow this guy to rise to this position? Clearly, the pastor speaks for God and if you’re a teenage girl who has been taught this lesson your whole life, you don’t second guess when he asks you to fuck him for Jesus. You walk up that mountain top like Abraham and you strip.
And it all follows reasonably, except of course for the premise that there’s any god at all. There’s your harm of religion.
